Can You Take Grab from Singapore to Johor Bahru? (2026 Guide)

Singapore to Johor Bahru cross-border travel

Yes — Grab now offers licensed cross-border rides from Singapore to Johor as of May 2026, but only by advance booking and only within Johor. Here's how it works, plus how to reach KL, Genting and beyond by private car.

Short answer: Yes — but with conditions. As of 4 May 2026, Grab runs a licensed cross-border ride service from Singapore into Johor. It is booking-only (you must reserve 12 hours to 7 days ahead), it covers only Johor state, and it uses licensed cross-border taxis booked through the Grab app — not a regular on-demand GrabCar. If your destination is anywhere beyond Johor — Kuala Lumpur, Genting, Malacca, Penang, Cameron Highlands — Grab's cross-border service does not go there, and a private charter is the practical option.

This guide explains exactly how the new Grab cross-border service works, where it can and can't take you, and how to plan a trip that goes deeper into Malaysia.

Last updated: 24 May 2026. Cross-border rules are new and still in a pilot phase, so always reconfirm current terms in the Grab app before you book.

How does Grab cross-border from Singapore work in 2026?

Grab received its first Cross-Border Ride-Sourcing Operator Licence (CRSOL) on 30 April 2026, and the service began a pilot on 4 May 2026.

A few things make it different from the Grab you use inside the city:

  • It's a pre-booked service, not instant. You schedule the ride between 12 hours and 7 days in advance. You can't open the app and get a car in five minutes for a border crossing.
  • It uses licensed cross-border taxis. The ride is fulfilled by drivers authorised to cross the Singapore–Malaysia checkpoint, booked through the Grab app — not standard private-hire GrabCar.
  • It runs on a quota. For 2026, each country issued around 300 cross-border permits, so availability is limited, especially at peak times.

In short: it's a legitimate, app-based way to cross the border by car — as long as your plan fits inside its rules.

Where can Grab cross-border actually take me?

Only within Johor. The pilot connects Singapore with a defined set of Johor locations:

  • Drop-off / pick-up areas in Johor: Johor Bahru city, Iskandar Puteri, Forest City, Kulai, and Senai (Senai Airport).
  • Return pick-up points are fixed. Heading back to Singapore, you can typically only be collected from designated points such as Toppen, Mid Valley Southkey, Angsana, and Larkin — not from any address you like.

So if you're going to JB for shopping, food, Legoland, or to catch a flight from Senai, Grab cross-border can work. But the moment your plan involves a destination outside Johor, it's off the map.

What are the limits of Grab cross-border?

It's a real improvement over having no app option at all — but it's built for a narrow use case. The main limits:

  • No instant rides. Everything is pre-booked 12 hours to 7 days ahead, so it doesn't suit spontaneous or last-minute trips.
  • Johor only. There is no Grab cross-border ride to KL, Genting, Malacca, Penang, or Cameron Highlands.
  • No multi-stop or day trips. It's point-to-point. You can't ask the same car to wait, make several stops, or do a full-day itinerary.
  • Fixed return points. You go back from a designated location, not your hotel door or wherever you happen to be.
  • Quota-limited. With roughly 300 permits per side in 2026, peak-period availability can be tight.

For a straight Singapore–JB hop, those limits may not matter. For anything more ambitious, they do.

I want to go beyond Johor (KL, Genting, Malacca, Penang) — what are my options?

For destinations outside Johor, the practical choice is a private cross-border charter — a car and driver booked for your whole trip.

This is what Luxway Taxi does. The differences that matter for longer or more flexible journeys:

  • We cover all of Malaysia, not just Johor — Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands, Malacca, Penang, Desaru and more.
  • Instant booking on WhatsApp — no 12-hour-to-7-day lead time. Message us and confirm.
  • Door to door, from your address in Singapore to your exact destination, and back.
  • Flexible itineraries — multi-stop trips, day tours, and full-day hire where the car stays with you.
  • Choose your vehicle — Toyota Innova (up to 6), Alphard/Vellfire, or Hyundai Starex for larger groups and luggage.
  • Fixed prices — you know the fare before you go (see full pricing): JB from SGD 100, Legoland 100, Desaru 160, Malacca 260, Kuala Lumpur 340, Genting 380, Cameron Highlands 510.

It's a different tool for a different job: Grab cross-border is fine for a simple JB run; a private charter is built for going further, with more people, on your own schedule.
